In celebration of our 110th anniversary, we are spotlighting services at Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services (HCS). This month, our focus is Friendly Meals and Meals on Wheels.
The Friendly Meals and Meals on Wheels are relative newcomers to the HCS family of services; both programs serving good food and friendship for seniors
started in the early 1970s. The Friendly Meals got its start in Keene at the Unitarian Church on Washington Street; the food was prepared in the dining commons at Keene State College! Hinsdale Friendly Meals opened in the VFW on Main Street in 1976; in 1979, Meadowood Friendly Meals opened in Troy at the Assembly Hall where it continues today. Over the years, monthly Friendly Meals dining rooms have started in Marlborough, Jaffrey, North Walpole, Marlow, Stoddard/Nelson and Westmoreland.
Meals on Wheels have also expanded in the last forty years after getting started in Keene
and Hinsdale. Meals on Wheels are now served in fifteen towns in Cheshire County. In 1974 (the first year of Friendly Meals!) 14,739 meals were served; last year the Friendly Meals and Meals on Wheels served 118,853 meals at their ten dining rooms and
delivered meals to fifteen towns!
Do you remember when our dining rooms opened? Do you have favorite stories to share? Let us know! We are collecting stories and pictures during our anniversary getting ready for our celebration this fall!
