Hospice During the Holidays: Comfort & Compassion Wherever You Call Home
The holidays have a way of amplifying what we’re already carrying in our hearts. For caregivers and families with a loved one in hospice, the season may feel different: slower, more emotional, and unexpectedly heavy. Hospice at HCS leverages over 100 years of expertise in supporting families, working with them to ensure every precious moment can be spent together.
One of the primary benefits of hospice care during the holidays is the opportunity for patients to spend their days in the comfort of wherever they call home, surrounded by the people and the environment they hold dear. This familiarity can be incredibly soothing, offering a sense of security and peace during a challenging time. Members of the Hospice at HCS team are available to help patients and families create personal and meaningful goals for the holiday season, offering compassionate support, guidance and opportunities for rest. Our care team offers the following suggestions for honoring and celebrating the holidays while caring for a loved one in hospice:
- Talk Expectations
It’s important to acknowledge that the holidays will look different. Have an open discussion with your loved ones about which traditions you want to maintain, modify or pause. Consider an alternative way to handle tasks and create backup plans for social engagements that prioritize you and your loved one’s comfort. - Creating New Traditions While Honoring Memories
Discuss ways to honor the loved one while creating space for new traditions that can provide comfort. This could be playing their favorite holiday music, including their favorite dishes in meals, lighting a special candle in their honor, creating a memory box, or sharing stories and memories with family and loved ones. - Supporting the Loved One
Loved ones can bring the holiday spirit to the patient through decorating patient spaces, participating in activities together, be present & engaged during visits, and remembering that quality of time often matters more than quantity.
There is No “Right” or “Wrong” Way to Handle Grief During the Holidays
What matters most is finding an approach that feels right for you and your loved ones. Many caregivers experience increased stress and anticipatory grief during the holidays, often while trying to maintain a sense of celebration for those around them. At Hospice at HCS, we understand these challenges and offer a range of supports, including spiritual care, and guidance for managing caregiver responsibilities. These resources can help you care for yourself, find moments of peace, and remain present with your loved one throughout the season.
Remember, allowing yourself moments of joy does not lessen the love or connection you have with the person you are caring for or have lost—it is a way of honoring the life and love you share. As you move through this holiday season, be gentle with yourself, and know that support is always available through Hospice at HCS whenever you need it.
- Remember that you and your loved ones are on the same team
- Give yourself permission to say “no” to overwhelming commitments.
- Plan for extra rest.
- Seek and accept emotional support from loved ones, a spiritual guide, counselor or support group.
- Talk openly about your loved one
- Find moments of joy without guilt
- Maintain physical exercise as a natural mood lifter
- Offer grace for “human moments”
- Take each day as it comes
The Hospice Benefit

This thoughtful flexibility allows families to approach the holiday season in ways that are most meaningful to them, incorporating the traditions and moments that bring comfort and peace.
