We are pleased to announce that the Jaffrey Meals on Wheels volunteers were recognized during Volunteer NH’s 2021 Spirit of NH Awards.

Volunteer NH recognizes those who go above and beyond the call to serve throughout the Granite State, shining a spotlight on the often-unsung heroes among us in front of an audience of their families, friends, colleagues, and the greater community.  This year the Jaffrey Meals on Wheels volunteers are being recognized for their unwavering commitment to their community during the COVID pandemic.  When many services were shutting down in March 2020, they stepped up, even though many were older and at risk themselves.  They realized that it was more important than ever to keep meals on wheels going to serve the older residents of Jaffrey, so they adopted new routines to keep everyone safe and carried on without missing a day!

These volunteers had an impact on 50 of the most at-risk elders in Jaffrey, delivering over 7,500 meals over the course of the year.  The participants were particularly homebound and isolated during this time, and they looked forward to the Meals on Wheels driver not only for their food, but to see a friendly face during the day! The volunteers delivered breakfast bags and additional meals for weekends to help provide additional sustenance for those who no longer had friends or relatives to go to the store for them.  Even though they stood at the door to be safe, the drivers were a friendly face and daily safety check.  They were a lifeline for the older residents of their town!
